Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. How did you meet your significant other? If you don't have a significant other, tell us how you met your best friend. 

My husband and I met in high school. I was a freshman his senior year. I ran the tech booth for our theater department, and during the production of Godspell, John the Baptist started the show coming out of the tech booth. I had a crush on the older boy with the beautiful singing voice. 

When social media first became a thing, and you added everyone you knew, we connected online and stayed acquaintances that way. Fast forward a few more years and when he took a job in Idaho after finishing his PhD, we started messaging and then calling and texting talking about what there is to do west of the Mississippi since he'd never been, and I had been living west of the Mississippi for ten years. Once we started talking, we never stopped - that was in May. Labor Day weekend he visited me in Colorado, and then we traded weekends back and forth between Idaho and Colorado. In December I flew to Alabama for his sister's wedding. In February, we went to New York for my birthday and got engaged. I moved to Idaho in April, and we had our wedding celebration that October. We just celebrated nine years of marriage.

2. It's Department Store Day (October 16)...do you still shop in department stores? If not do you miss that kind of shopping experience? Do you have a favorite department store? Any fun memories of department store shopping when you were a child? 

I love department stores! When I was younger and we'd visit my grandparents in Pittsburgh, I used to love going downtown to Kauffman's. Especially at Christmas!

3. Something you're currently nuts about? 

The creativity of our students with their literary pumpkins!

4. What's your favorite nut and is there a favorite recipe where this nut is used? 

I love pistachios and cashews most, but adore peanut butter or almond butter and apples. I also love cooking with pecans and adding walnuts to my banana bread!

5. On Wednesday we officially reach the '70 days until Christmas' mark. Have you purchased any gifts? If you don't celebrate Christmas then how about Hanukkah presents? 

I have not made any purchases yet, but I think my list of what we're getting people is complete.

October is FLYING. I feel like there is so much happening this month and time is just passing faster than I'm able to fully grasp right now. It is full of so many good and fun things, I'm hoping November slows down a bit.

    I agree about time flying. Whew! You definitely covered a lot of geography in your dating years : ) I used to love the department stores at Christmas time too. Shopping has really changed, especially since Covid. We live in the country so I've become accustomed to mostly online shopping. I'm sometimes surprised at what all is in the stores when I go into one. Have a great day!

  1. Something that's had you  'chuffed to bits'  recently?  I am feeling settled and cozy in the home we bought over the summer and it's bringing me such joy! I added some autumnal decorations on Sunday and it makes the house feel even more like ours. 2. Tell us about an instance recently where you were tempted to 'throw a wobbly' ( expression used to describe tantrums thrown, usually by adults or people who should know better)  Honestly, when doctors appointments that have been scheduled for 6+ months get cancelled and rescheduled without consent and then you have to scramble to reschedule knowing full well how far in advance the offices book out. Why make an appointment if it's going to change and then you'll be pushed out even farther? It drives me absolutely crazy, and even more so when the appointment in question isn't for me, but for my child.   1. When the Hodgepodge lands on September 11th I want to acknowledge that. Will you purposely pause to remember, pray, or attend any sort of ceremony on 9/11? Share any thoughts or memories you'd like to share about this day.  I vividly remember both September 11 and the one year anniversary. I've shared often about my memories of the day itself, but rarely about the one year anniversary.  We moved from Washington D.C., where my dad was stationed at the pentagon, to Minot, North Dakota in July 2001. While the towers were devastating and are the most vivid image in my memory, its the fear I felt around the Pentagon and the area we had just left behind that appear every year in memory.  On the one year anniversary, we were in our second year in Minot. I had switched from going to school off base to the on base school that year as a result of how the world on military bases changed post-9/11.
